Pan-African Neonatal Care Assessment Survey (PANCAS)

Building on the Children’s Hospitals in Africa Mapping Project (CHAMP) survey, Drs. Lawrence Stanberry, Lisa Saiman, Philip LaRussa and Wilmot James are developing a new Pan-African Neonatal Care Assessment Survey (PANCAS) to learn more about factors that could influence the risk of neonatal nosocomial infection in African hospitals.

Information to be gained includes: a better understanding of the number of neonates cared for in African hospitals, the number of cribs/beds/isolettes, the types of nosocomial infections neonates develop, the types of antibiotics used, the use of intravenous catheters, the frequency of Kangaroo care, the types of staff working in the unit, strategies for cleaning the NICU, and visitor policies.
