Eye Care and Prevention of Blindness

Vision loss and blindness affect 1.1 billion people around the globe. Those living in lesser developed countries bear the heaviest burden. Globally 43 million are blind, 295 million have moderate to severe vision loss and 258 million have mild vision loss. Blindness is the fifth leading cause of disability and so addressing this burden is a pressing need. Blindness affects all age groups. Leading causes are infectious and chronic. Therefore, this area can appeal to those with diverse interests. Fortunately, there are established, cost-effective measures that have been implemented in most countries. The WHO spearheads several programs in this area.

There are a number of opportunities for students to pursue as a scholarly project, summer research project or a pull-out research year in several countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. They involve working with non-governmental organizations or with direct patient care providers in these countries. Projects may involve data analysis from clinical services, and systematic reviews, or development of new programs. For students interested in rehabilitation, there are opportunities to work with schools for the blind.
