Biography

I have spent the past 45 years working in the field of blindness prevention. First in the area of vitamin A deficiency and then in cataract surgical programs as Medical Director of Helen Keller International. Subsequently, I served as Secretary General of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. In that role, working with WHO, a global program to eradicate avoidable blindness was implemented. I then served as the founding chair of the ViSION 2020/USA coordinating body, bringing together all of the leading blindness prevention organizations in the US. Currently I serve as vice President of the Board of the Lavelle Fund for the Blind.
